Koolamara Waters is located on the edge of Ferntree Gully in Melbourne’s east. This former wasteland of low-lying, flood-prone land with poor-quality soil is now a unique small residential housing estate of the highest quality incorporating a truly exclusive environmental feature. Developers Wilbow Corporation, working with the Australian Platypus Conservancy and Melbourne Water, have created the only known purpose-built platypus breeding environment, indeed something that is worthy calling 'unique'.

Description

Central to the 100-lot project, located on Blackwood Park Road, is the $3 million man-made wetland and waterway system specifically designed to protect the rare platypus found to be breeding in the adjoining Monbulk Creek.

Working closely with Melbourne Water, who contributed $1m to the wetlands construction, and the Australian Platypus Conservancy, Wilbow managed the careful development of the unique wetland environment that features varying depths and hide-away areas, logs and special planting to encourage platypus breeding.

Koolamara's extensive wetland system was earmarked for an area of the site prone to flooding, thus making a constructive and environmental benefit of the otherwise useless land.

Occupying more than two thirds of the site, the park, platypus reserve, and wetlands span more than 35 acres and have been awarded with two special commendations from the City of Knox and the Planning Institute Australia (Vic).

The wetlands are also part of a greater drive to restore the Monbulk Creek by cleansing storm water run-off reducing harmful toxins in the area such as Nitrogen that pollutes our waterways and bays.

Melbourne Water has a strategy to reduce the total amount of Nitrogen going into the Bay by 1,000 tons and this one project will reduce the amount of nitrogen by a ton every year.
