WestWyck occupies the building and grounds of the former Brunswick West Primary School in inner suburban Melbourne. The school ran out of students in the 1980s and threatened to become yet another example of quality inner-urban infrastructure that had lost its original function and faced the bulldozer. Instead, the WestWyck developers aimed to bring the building to new and vibrant life as an urban demonstration showpiece of sustainable development and good design. This has included engaging a landscape artist as part of the project team.

Michael Mobbs pioneered sustainable urban lifestyle in Australia, documenting the journey in his book "Sustainable House". He and his family are entirely self sufficient with water collected from a 10m run of Smartflo gutter on his terrace house in Myrtle St, Chippendale.

Smartflo gutters address the dual problems of rainwater harvest and adequate roof drainage using a design based on the requirements of AS3500 Part 3 - Roof Drainage Systems Design. Tests performed at Newcastle University by Dr. Sean Manning have determined that Smartflo will handle storm events up to 175mm per hour, before reaching overflow.
