Smartflo Gutters on Sustainable House

Michael Mobbs pioneered sustainable urban lifestyle in Australia, documenting the journey in his book "Sustainable House". He and his family are entirely self sufficient with water collected from a 10m run of Smartflo gutter on his terrace house in Myrtle St, Chippendale.
Smartflo gutters address the dual problems of rainwater harvest and adequate roof drainage using a design based on the requirements of AS3500 Part 3 - Roof Drainage Systems Design. Tests performed at Newcastle University by Dr. Sean Manning have determined that Smartflo will handle storm events up to 175mm per hour, before reaching overflow. Should the overflow point be reached, water will always flow off the outer lip of the gutter, away from the house.

Rockcote Design Centre

The Rockcote Design Centre is Australia’s first sustainable commercial building built on a former wasteland at Nerang (near the Gold Coast). The Rockcote Design Centre won the President’s Award in the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s National Awards for Excellence in 2006 and was announced as the runner-up in the international Prix D’Excellence Awards – Environmental Category at the FIABCI World Congress in Amsterdam on May 29 2008. The building is totally self-sufficient for water, waste treatment and energy, selling excess power to the electricity grid. Other environmentally friendly practices include natural systems for heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation and an organic garden.

Gandangara Estate

Gandangara Estate is in Barden Ridge, 31 km south-west of Sydney's CBD and is a 41 lot residential subdivision project provided for rehabilitation of a degraded former quarry site. Gandangara Estate has an environmental management plan, incorporating indigenous native plants only and non-invasive grass, passive solar design is implemented, solar hot water is used, all stormwater is tertiary treated (Ingal system) and surrounding bushland is preserved, including a cultural sites management plan. The development provides for Aboriginal employment for construction and post construction stages.

Crystal Waters is a rural subdivision north of Brisbane, established in 1987 and designed by Max Lindegger, Robert Tap, Barry Goodman and Geoff Young. It consists of 83 residential and 2 commercial properties. 80% of the 640 acre property is owned in common and can be used for sustainable agriculture, forestry, recreation and habitat projects. It received the 1996 World Habitat Award (assessed by Dr Wally N’Dow) for its "pioneering work in demonstrating new ways of low impact, sustainable living".

The Waterford Valley Land Rehabilitation Project is located in Knox City, Victoria at the foothills of the Dandenong ranges in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. The Project has rehabilitated 140 acres of land into wetlands, a golf course, retirement village, hostel accommodation and a conference centre as well as reintroducing indigenous flora and fauna. The Waterford Valley Land Rehabilitation Project won the Local Government Property Award from the Australian Property Institute.
